
Bean Scores Game-Winning Goal in Double-Overtime Thriller at Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- With 14 seconds left on the clock in the second overtime period, sophomore Caroline Bean ripped a one-timer pass into the back of the cage to give the No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team an 8-7 road victory at Villanova Saturday afternoon (March 20) at Villanova Stadium.
U-M came back from a four-goal deficit in the third quarter to secure its ninth win of the season. Senior Kaley Thompson led the Wolverines with three goals, while five other Wolverines scored one goal each, including the game-winner from Bean. Michigan outshot Villanova 25-22.
Senior Erin Garvey led Michigan on the draw control with three wins and scored a goal, and Kaitlyn Mead added two draws and a goal.
Graduate student Arielle Weissman made eight saves including a key save in the overtime period, while Garvey and Maddie Burns had two caused turnovers each.
Mead got Michigan on the scoreboard in the first two minutes of the game, and Villanova evened the score less than two minutes later with 11:49 left in the first quarter. With four minutes remaining, the Wildcats scored a go-ahead goal to take a 2-1 advantage into the second quarter.
Villanova doubled its score in the second quarter, while Michigan was unable to find the back of the cage as it trailed 4-1 heading into the halftime break.
The Wildcats extended their lead to 5-1 early in the third quarter before the Wolverines went on a three-goal run to come within one of Villanova with 10:24 left in the period. Villanova ended the run with a goal to extend its lead to two, 6-4, with under five minutes left in the third quarter.
The two-goal advantage did not last long as Michigan came within one with 1:24 remaining when Thompson came around the back of the cage and fired it in as U-M trailed 6-5 going into the final 15 minutes of regulation.
Thompson recorded the hat trick to start the fourth quarter and tie the game at 6, but again the Wildcats answered to go up 7-6 with 10:24 left in the fourth quarter. Fifth-year senior Caitlin Muir knotted the score at 7 with just under 10 minutes to play while each team looked for the game-winning goal with the remaining time. U-M fought off a Villanova man-up opportunity in the closing two minutes, and the game went to overtime tied 7-7.
After neither team was able to find the back of the cage in the first six-minute overtime period, Weissman made a key save with three minutes left in the second OT before the Wildcats were given a yellow card with 14 seconds left. Michigan used the card to its advantage as Caroline Davis passed the ball to Bean, who fired a one-timer from the left side of the cage to end a scoreless drought of nearly 22 minutes and secure the 8-7 win for the Wolverines.
Michigan returns home to host No. 5 Northwestern at noon Friday (March 26) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium and on Big Ten Network.
