ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Lora Clarke posted two goals and assisted on the third as the No. 6-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team wrapped up the regular season with a 3-1 decision against No. 18 rival Ohio State on Friday night (Oct. 28) in front of 605 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field.
Clarke scored early in the second quarter and late in the third for her second multi-goal effort this season, upping her goal total to a team-best 11. Clarke notched her first at the 15:31 mark -- just seconds into the second quarter -- with a one-timer in front of the OSU cage. Junior Rosie Hope carried the ball into the circle and to the right baseline before feeding a pass to the middle for Clarke and earning an assist.
Clarke added another in the waning moments of the third, at 44:40, rocketing a reverse shot from just inside the top of the circle to the near lower right corner of the cage.
It was junior Pilar Oliveros with the Wolverines' first and game-winning goal, however, converting on a direct corner shot at the 8:29 mark. Oliveros deflected a shot from the top of the circle off the Buckeye goalkeeper's stick and in. It was her third of the season and second game-winner in as many games. Senior Nina Apoola and Clarke earned assists for the stop and the insert, respectively.
Despite relatively even stats -- U-M led shots, 11-9, while corners were 3-3 -- the Wolverines controlled the contest. Ohio State spoiled the shutout bid with a corner rebound at 49:12 in the fourth quarter. Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Anna Spieker posted five saves, while the Buckeyes' Abby Danson stopped three of six Michigan shots on goal.
The Wolverines (11-5, 5-3 Big Ten) will kick off postseason play at the Big Ten Tournament next Thursday through Sunday (Nov. 3-6) at Buckeye Turf Field in Columbus, Ohio. Michigan, the No. 4 seed, will open up in the first quarterfinal contest against No. 5 seed Iowa at 11 a.m. on Thursday. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
