ROSEMONT, Ill. – Graduate student Meredith Haakenson and sophomore Avery Kalitta of the University of Michigan women's soccer team received All-Big Ten accolades, with Haakenson being named to the All-Big Ten third team, while Kalitta earned the team's sportsmanship award, the conference announced Thursday (Oct. 27).
Haakenson picked up her second career All-Big Ten accolade after earning a spot on the second team in 2019. This season, she tied for second on the team in goals and assists (five) and also tied for the team lead in points (15).
She notched a brace against Toledo (Sept. 11) and had a score against Boston University (Aug. 28). Her best stretch of the season came on the Minnesota and Iowa road trip (Sept. 29-Oct. 2) as she scored the match-winning tally against her homestate Gophers and also scored two days later resulting in a 1-1 draw at Iowa. Perfect on penalty kicks (2-for-2), she was fourth on the team in shots (21) and led the team in shooting percentage at .240. She ends her U-M career as the program's all-time leader in matches played with 97.
Kalitta, who was on the Big Ten Preseason Watch List and a member of the 2021 all-freshman team, started every match at her customary holding midfield role and logged 1,355 minutes on the pitch. She totaled six shots on the campaign, with her lone goal coming against Toledo (Sept. 11)
