EVANSTON, Ill. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team fell 1-0 in double-overtime at No. 3 Northwestern, snapping its five-game winning streak, on Friday afternoon (Oct. 21) at the Wildcats' Lakeside Field.
Northwestern (13-3, 4-3 Big Ten) converted on a penalty corner with a 40 seconds remaining on the clock, at the 79:20 mark, in the second overtime. The Wolverines stopped two earlier overtime corners -- while also failing to convert on two of their own in the first extra frame -- but NU made good on the third attempt with a goal on the direct sweep from the arc.
Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Anna Spieker earned two huge stops in the second overtime, saving a reverse chip from the top of the arc and the point-blank rebound that followed. She finished with four saves on the day.
Michigan (9-3, 4-3 Big Ten) outshot the Wildcats 14-12 while corners were even at five apiece. Northwestern goalkeeper Annabel Skubisz earned six saves to secure the shutout -- just the second against U-M this season.
The Wolverines, who have now outshot 12 of 14 opponents on the year, were not without their chances in a game largely played between the 25s -- and largely controlled the first overtime period. Michigan got the ball to junior Lora Clarke loose near the left post, but Skubisz got over to break up the shot. U-M also drew a pair of corners out of a flurry late in the extra frame but had the first blocked before missing wide on the second.
The Wolverines will wrap the road weekend with neutral-site, non-conference matchup against No. 8 Iowa at 11:30 a.m. CDT on Sunday (Oct. 23) at Northwestern's Lakeside Field. Michigan defeated the Hawkeyes 2-0 last Sunday (Oct. 16) in the conference meeting.
