Wolverines Upend No. 14 Scarlet Knights to Sweep Weekend Series

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 21-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team wrapped up a sweep of the series against No. 14-ranked Rutgers with a 12-9 win Sunday afternoon (March 7) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
The Wolverines (2-3, 2-3 B1G) led wire-to-wire and were paced offensively by senior Caitlin Muir, who had seven points with two goals and five assists. Also having big days on the offensive end of the field were Nadine Stewart and Caroline Davis, who each recorded a hat trick for the Maize and Blue. Junior Kaitlyn Mead added a pair of goals and won a team-high four draw controls.
Defensively, Katherine Galzerano picked up a team-best four ground balls and tied with Mead for the team lead in caused turnovers with two. Senior Arielle Weissman earned her second straight win in net for the Wolverines, making five saves against the Scarlet Knights (3-3, 3-3 B1G).
Stewart lit up the scoreboard first with a goal seven minutes into the contest before Rutgers tied the game for the only time in the 60-minute contest. Junior Erin Garvey and freshman Caroline Bean netted back-to-back goals to put the Maize and Blue up 3-1 with just under 13 minutes to play in the opening half.
Muir assisted Stewart on back-to-back tallies with less than five minutes to play in the first half to put Michigan up 5-2 before Davis ended the U-M scoring in the first half with a free-position make. The Scarlet Knights found one final goal and trailed 6-3 heading into the halftime break.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Muir got things going for the Maize and Blue with her first goal of the game as she spun around her defender and fired one in. Rutgers pulled within one, 8-7, as it went on a three-goal run, but Mead put a stop to that as she flew down the field and scored off a pass from Maggie Kane with 14:35 to play.
The teams exchanged goals in the final eight minutes of play with Muir netting the final one with 1:55 remaining to secure the win.
The Wolverines will be back in action Friday and Sunday (March 19-21) when they take on Penn State in State College, Pa. Game times are 4 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Sunday at Panzer Stadium.
