ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team scored three goals off its penalty-corner attack en route to a 3-1 win against Penn State on Sunday (Oct. 20) in front of 554 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. The win completed a perfect home weekend for the Wolverines, who extended their win streak to six straight games.
Junior/sophomore Emma Tamer tallied the Wolverines' first two markers -- one apiece in the first and second quarters -- for her second multi-goal effort in three games. She opened scoring off Michigan's first corner of the contest at the 6:48 mark when she ramped a shot off a Penn State defender's stick and high into the cage. She scored again early in the second, at 17:11, when she nailed the direct shot to the lower-right corner.
Senior Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort and sophomore Kathryn Peterson earned assists on both goals for the stop and insert, respectively. Tamer now has seven goals on the season and is tied for the Wolverine team lead.
After Penn State narrowed the score to 2-1 with a third-quarter goal off its first corner chance, Peterson added a key insurance tally in the fourth, at 53:24, out of a scrum in front following another Wolverine corner. Junior Halle O'Neill hammered a pass from the top of the circle to junior Kayla Reed on the right post. Reed tipped the ball high, and Peterson batted it out of the air for her fifth of the season.
Michigan outshot the Nittany Lions, 13-3, and outcornered them, 6-2. Sophomore goalkeeper Anna Spieker earned one save -- on a point-blank PSU shot in the third -- while PSU goalkeeper Brie Barraco stopped three of six U-M shots on goal.
The Wolverines (12-3, 5-1 Big Ten) will travel east next weekend for their final regular-season road trip, taking on Rutgers at 3 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 25) in Piscataway, New Jersey, before wrapping up with a noon slate against Saint Joseph's on Sunday (Oct. 27) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
