ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Nicki Hernandez found the back of the net with her second game-winning goal of the season to lift the University of Michigan to a 3-2 victory over Marquette on Thursday night (Aug. 23) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Hernandez has scored in three straight games for the Wolverines and added an assist on Reilly Martin's first goal of the 2018 season. Sophomore Sarah Stratigakis saw her second goal in as many games to knot the score at 2 for the Maize and Blue, while Alia Martin and Taylor Timko added assists on the night.
Sophomore Izzy Nino earned her third win of the season in net and the Michigan offense outshot Marquette, 9-7.
"We are always talking about it's a process and getting experiences that are going to help us along our journey," said head coach Jennifer Klein. "It's a long season and I think this was a great experience having to battle against a very good physical team and have to fight all the way to the end and hold that lead."
Michigan's first chance came in the fourth minute of the match when Hernandez found herself alone inside the 18-yard box, but the Marquette keeper stepped up and grabbed the ball off the shot to keep the match scoreless.
The Wolverines got on the scoreboard in the 17th minute of the match. Hernandez dribbled around a Marquette defender and brought the ball out to Martin, who ripped the ball from 30 yards out, up and out of the reach of the keeper to allow Michigan to take an early 1-0 advantage.
The Golden Eagles answered with a goal of their own in the 27th minute, when Maddie Monticello lobbed the ball into the air to Carrie Madden, who headed it into the goal from 12 yards out to even the score at 1.
Both teams found late opportunities to end the first half, but neither was able to find the back of the net heading into halftime tied at 1.
The Wolverines trailed for the first time in the 2018 season when Monticello and Madden combined for the second goal of the match for Marquette in the 50th minute.
Michigan's response came 10 minutes later when Alia Martin dribbled the ball up to the 18-yard box and found the feet of Stratigakis. The sophomore midfielder worked herself around the defender and brought the keeper out before shooting the ball into the lower left corner of the goal to tie the game at 2.
Hernandez came up clutch again for the Wolverines in the 84th minute when she brought a pass from Timko down to her feet and lined a shot into the bottom-left corner of the net past a diving keeper to propel Michigan to a 3-2 victory over Marquette.
The Wolverines will close out their four-game home stretch on Sunday (Aug. 26) when Michigan plays host to Louisville at U-M Soccer Stadium for a 2 p.m. contest.
