GILBERT, Ariz. -- University of Michigan senior Emma Way was selected to participate in the 2018 Victory Sports Tours/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I Senior Game, the NFHCA announced on Wednesday (Oct. 17). Way was listed among 38 total selections, while senior Maggie Bettez was named as one of 12 alternates.
Coinciding with the NCAA Championships, Louisville will host the annual competition on Friday, Nov. 16, at 6 p.m., immediately following the semifinals at Trager Stadium. Any individual whose team makes the final four will not participate in the all-star contest.
Way, a 2017 NFHCA All-West Region second team honoree, is enjoying a career year as a senior for the Wolverines, leading the Big Ten and ranking fifth nationally with a 1.00 goals-per-game average. She has scored in 12 of the last 15 games and leads Michigan with a career-best 16 goals on the season. Over her four-year career, Way boasts 39 goals -- including 12 game-winners -- and 19 assists. She shares the eighth spot among U-M's all-time scoring leaders.
Bettez has been a key component of the Wolverine defensive unit since arriving in Ann Arbor -- one that has allowed only 1.13 goals and 8.48 total shots per game over the last four seasons. Bettez also owns one career goal and seven assists. She was chosen for the USA Field Hockey National Development Team in July.
Michigan will recognize Bettez, Way and its other three seniors prior to its final regular-season home game on Sunday (Oct. 21) when it hosts No. 21 Ohio State at noon at Phyllis Ocker Field. Admission is free, and the game will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
