ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 20-ranked University of Michigan men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to the Oakland Golden Grizzlies Wednesday (Sept. 27) at U-M Soccer Stadium.

The Wolverines were able to strike early, finding the back of the net in the seventh minute on their first shot of the game. The goal was scored on a header by freshman Mohammed Zakyi, his second of the season, with the assist coming on a long ball from freshman Marc Ybarra on a set-piece restart.

The rest of the half was scoreless with Michigan adding seven more shots and Oakland countering with five.

Against the run of play, Oakland scored in the 49th minute off a loose ball in the box that was collected and headed in by senior Austin Ricci, leaving the game knotted at one. The game remained even until the Golden Grizzlies added another goal midway through the second half to give them a one-goal advantage.

U-M controlled possession for the remainder of the game. Chances to equalize were bountiful, highlighted by a set piece at the top of the box from sophomore Jack Hallahan with less than a minute remaining. A header from Zakyi with 18 seconds to play nearly equalized as well, but the final efforts fell short as Oakland was able to hold on for a 2-1 victory.

The Wolverines will return to Big Ten play Sunday (Oct. 1), traveling to State College, Pennsylvania, to take on the Penn State Nittany Lions in a 1 p.m. matchup that will be streamed via BTN Plus.
