ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team completed its weekend sweep in dominant fashion, knocking off No. 12 Stanford, 3-0, Sunday afternoon (Oct. 8) in front of 962 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. It was the Wolverines' third straight shutout victory and seventh of their current eight-game winning streak.
Michigan, which did not allow a shot against No. 20 Rutgers Friday night, held the Cardinal without a shot until the final 10 minutes of play, ultimately outshooting them, 28-4, and outcornering them, 12-2.
The Wolverines poured on the offense early, breaking through with sophomore Meg Dowthwaite's team-best 13th goal of the season at the 18:13 mark. Dowthwaite corralled the ball off a rebound in front and sent a reverse chip high into the nearside upper right corner of the cage. She initially did not get the call but asked for a video referral, which went Michigan's way and provided the early lead.
Both the Wolverines' second and third goals came off penalty-corner opportunities. Freshman Kayla Reed scored her second goal of the weekend -- fourth on the season -- just five minutes after Dowthwaite's tally, at 23:41, when she got her stick on senior Katie Trombetta's direct shot and redirected it high to the right side of the cage.
Sophomore Fay Keijer scored the Wolverines' third and final goal at the 47:22 mark after continued and sustained offensive pressure in the second half. Trombetta again earned an assist on the direct corner shot; Keijer laid out to tip it high and to the left side of the cage. It was her fifth marker of the season.
Senior goalkeeper Sam Swenson earned three saves in the shutout effort, stopping both the direct shot and the subsequent rebound off Stanford's first corner chance with just less than 10 minutes remaining. The Cardinal played out another corner with time expired, but the shot went wide. Stanford goalkeeper Kelsey Bing earned 13 saves, while a Cardinal defender added a defensive save in the second half.
