BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team earned its fourth straight shutout -- and eighth over its nine-game winning streak -- with a 2-0 victory against Indiana on Friday afternoon (Oct. 13) at the IU Field Hockey Complex. The Wolverines improved to 6-0 in Big Ten Conference play.
For the second time in three games, the Wolverines held their opponent without a shot, outshooting the Hoosiers, 27-0, and outcornering them, 14-0. Michigan has allowed just six total shots over its last four games and boasts nine shutouts on the season -- just one shy of its program record.
Sophomore Meg Dowthwaite netted the first and game-winning goal for the fourth straight contest -- her seventh total game-winner this season -- at the 22:10 mark after earning a one-on-one in the Hoosier circle. Graduate student Carly Bennett fed the ball in from the Indiana defensive 25 line on the right, and Dowthwaite first beat an IU defender then, from the stroke mark, lifted it high past goalkeeper Katie Johnson for her league-best 14th marker on the season.
The Wolverines poured on the pressure in the second half -- with a 17-0 shot advantage and 9-0 corner differential -- but struggled to convert on several penalty corner attacks until the final 10 minutes when freshmen Kayla Reed and Halle O'Neill teamed up to cushion their lead. Senior Katie Trombetta had her initial corner shot blocked in front, but Reed battled the ball loose then dove to poke it past the IU goalkeeper. Camped out on the right post, O'Neill was in position to sweep it into the open cage -- her second goal of the season.
Senior goalkeeper Sam Swenson earned the win -- and her sixth complete-game shutout of the season -- without needing to make a save. Indiana's Johnson stopped 13 of 15 Michigan shots on goal.
Michigan (12-2, 6-0 Big Ten) will wrap up the weekend road trip on Sunday (Oct. 15), taking on No. 22 Iowa at noon CDT at Grant Field in Iowa City, Iowa. The game will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
