ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The top four hitters in the Wolverine lineup combined for 21 hits, and freshman Ryan Nutof and sophomore Brett Adcock tossed quality starts on Saturday afternoon (April 18), as the University of Michigan baseball team completed a sweep of Purdue by taking both ends of a doubleheader, 7-0 and 7-5, at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Junior Jacob Cronenworth, senior Jackson Glines, junior Travis Maezes and sophomore Carmen Benedetti had the 21 hits and also drove in nine of the 14 runs on the day.
The story of game one was Nutof. He allowed just two hits and struck out five in 7.2 innings. Benedetti and freshman Michael Hendrickson preserved the shutout from the bullpen.
Michigan did much of its damage early in the opener. Four straight singles led to two runs on RBI hits from Maezes and Benedetti. Junior Cody Bruder's sacrifice fly scores Maezes and it was 3-0 in the first. Cronenworth then hit a one-out solo home run to straight away centerfield, his fifth of the season, to make it 4-0. The Maize and Blue then added three insurance runs in the eighth as Cronenworth brought in freshman Jake Bivens with a single; Glines tripled to right to score a run and then scored himself on a wild pitch.
Cronenworth and Benedetti each had four hits in game one, while Glines added three. Cronenworth also scored three of Michigan's seven runs.
Game two was a closer affair but Michigan again opened the scoring in the first as Benedetti doubled in the gap in right to score Glines. Purdue came back with a Kyle Johnson solo home run in the second but Michigan answered with a run in the third as Benedetti doubled again to score Glines.
Benedetti drove in his third run of the game in the fifth on a groundout that plated Glines. Brandon Kreig hit a solo shot in the sixth for Purdue, but sophomore Johnny Slater gave Michigan a 4-2 lead with an RBI double that brought in Bivens.
Michigan put up two huge runs in the top of the seventh as Benedetti drove in his fourth run with a one-out double and scored on an RBI single by Bivens. Purdue cut the lead to 6-5 in the eighth and had the bases loaded but freshman Bryan Pall induced a flyout to end the threat. Senior Kevin White walked with the bases loaded for an insurance run for the Maize and Blue. Purdue put runners on first and second with one out in the ninth, but Benedetti came in and struck out Kyle Wood swinging and Johnson looking to end the game and give the Wolverines a sweep.
Glines, Benedetti and Bivens had three hits apiece while Benedetti drove in four runs. Slater added two extra-base hits.
Adcock earned his fifth win of the season, striking out 10, one off a career high, while allowing five hits and two runs with a walk in six innings of work. Benedetti earned his first career save with his two ninth-inning punchouts.
Michigan ends the homestand this Tuesday (April 21) against Oakland. First pitch is at 4 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. [ Tickets ]
