U-M Succumbs to Eagles' Ninth-Inning Runs

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team entered the ninth inning knotted at 2-all with Eastern Michigan, before the Eagles scored a pair of runs in the top half of the inning in a 4-2 Wolverine defeat on Wednesday afternoon (April 15) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium .
With the game tied at two going into the ninth inning, the Eagles responded with a two-spot in that final inning. David Lett reached on an infield single with one out. He went to third on Jordan Peterson's double to left. Both runners scored on John Rubino's triple to center field. Rubino ended the day 5-for-5 with two runs batted in and four stolen bases.
John Montgomery drove in Rubino with a double in the first and a triple in the third for the Eagles' first two runs. Michigan got on base for the first time of the afternoon in the bottom of the fourth when freshman Jake Bivens hit a sharp single between first and second base. After junior Travis Maezes was hit by a pitch, sophomore Carmen Benedetti drove in Bivens to cut EMU's lead to 2-1.
Sophomore Johnny Slater opened the sixth inning with a double down the right-field line and advanced to third on senior Kyle Jusick's single up the middle. Slater scored while senior Dominic Jamett grounded into a double play, tying the game at two.
The score remained the same until the Rubino two-run triple in the ninth. Sophomore Cam Wysocki took the loss on the mound for the Wolverines, allowing three hits and two runs with a strikeout in 2.1 innings pitched.
Benedetti had two hits and an RBI to lead Michigan's offense.
Michigan hosts Purdue Friday afternoon (April 17) at 4 p.m. to begin a three-game weekend series at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. [ Tickets ]
