ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team fell to Minnesota, 3-1, in the final game of the three-game Big Ten series Sunday afternoon (April 6) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan plated a run in the bottom of the second inning to open the scoring. Junior Kyle Jusick (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) opened the frame with a double to the gap in right field. He moved to third on senior Cole Martin's (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) single to center and scored off freshman Carmen Benedetti's (Grosse Pointe, Mich./South) sacrifice fly to right. Minnesota answered with a run in the third. It looked as if U-M recorded the third out on a strikeout and a tag, but the batter, Dan Motl, was ruled safe. Motl then moved to second on a throwing error and scored on Connor Schaefbauer's double to left.
The Gophers took the lead in the fourth on an RBI ground-rule double from Troy Traxler and a run-scoring single by Bobby Juan, giving Minnesota a 3-1 lead. Michigan had its best chance to score in the eighth as a hit by pitch and two singles loaded the bases with one out, but a double play ended the threat.
Martin had two hits to lead the Maize and Blue offense. Junior Trent Szkutnik (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) struck out five in six innings of work. He allowed seven hits and two earned runs and was tagged with the loss. Fifth-year senior Logan McAnallen (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) had a pair of strikeouts in 2.1 innings of relief.
Michigan ends its nine-game homestand this Wednesday (April 9) against Notre Dame at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m., and concessions will cost just $2.
