ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team suffered its second overtime loss in as many games, dropping a 2-1 decision to Marquette on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 18) before 960 fans at the U-M Soccer Stadium. Kelmend Islami scored the game-winning goal with 51 seconds remaining in the second overtime.

Adam Shaw
Islami's game-winner came on an assist from goalkeeper David Check, who played a long ball that redshirt freshman goalkeeper Adam Grinwis (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills HS) charged but was unable to get to before Islami flicked the ball past him and into the empty net. In the 107th minute, sophomore Fabio Pereira (Sao Paolo, Brazil/South Kent School [Conn.]) had a chance to score the game-winner, but his shot from 15 yards out was saved by David Check on a diving effort.
Each team had three shots in the first OT, with the only save come from Check in the final seconds off a free kick by the Wolverines. The best chance of the first overtime session came when Marquette's Calum Mallace headed the ball off the right post on a corner kick.
Marquette tied the game, 1-1, at 72:36 on a goal by C. Nortey. Calum Mallace took a free kick for the Golden Eagles and Grinwis made the initial save, but as he went to the ground, the ball popped out and Nortey buried the one-timer into the open net for the equalizer.
Michigan grabbed a 1-0 lead at 10:36 of the contest on the first career goal for senior captain Adam Shaw (Lone Tree, Colo./Highlands Ranch HS). He scored on a shot from the right side of the 18-yard box to the lower left corner. Sophomore forward Malcolm Miller (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill HS) assisted on the marker.
Marquette had back-to-back scoring chances but was unable to capitalize in the 19th minute. Eric Pothast headed a corner kick toward the top of the goal, but Grinwis punched it over the crossbar, setting up another corner. Pothast had another header that was played toward the Michigan goal, but the defense cleared the ball out of danger.
U-M had a great scoring chance at 39:14. The ball was touched by freshman Tyler Arnone (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville HS) on a set play following a Marquette foul and freshman forward Matthew Rickard (Exeter, Devonshire/Clyst Vale CC) ripped the shot from 25 yards out from above the left corner of the box off the post.
Michigan had nine shots on goal during the first half compared to six shots for Marquette. The Golden Eagles had four corner kicks compared to one for the Wolverines. Grinwis made three saves in the first half for U-M.
The Maize and Blue opens Big Ten play next Sunday (Sept. 25) in Columbus, Ohio, against rival Ohio State. The match will be televised by the Big Ten Network starting at 4 p.m.
