PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team had a pair of honorees selected as Big Ten Players of the Week. Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Christi Barwick (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) earned Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman Aline Fobe (Aartsellar, Belgium/Onze Lieve Vrouwe van Lourdes) was the league's Co-Freshman of the Week.
Barwick recorded her second shutout of the season and fourth of her career as Michigan defeated No. 12 Iowa, 2-0, Saturday morning (Oct. 1) in Ann Arbor. Barwick had all four saves in the second half, including back-to-back stops in the 41st minute. It was Michigan's fourth shutout of the season and third straight against the Hawkeyes. Barwick now has a 1.02 goals-against average, which leads the Big Ten and is eighth in the country, and a .759 save percentage on the season.
Barwick earns Michigan's first Defensive Player of the Week honor since Haley Jones (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) earned the award on Sept. 27, 2010.
Fobe stepped up from the backfield to the attack in Michigan's 2-0 win over the Hawkeyes, scoring the game-winning goal off a penalty corner in the first half, her second of the season. Fobe also helped the Michigan defense to its fourth shutout of the season by allowing the 12th-ranked Hawkeyes just five shots on the day. Fobe now has two goals and is tied for the team lead with four assists on the season. Fobe shares the Freshman of the Week honor with Penn State's Taylor Herold.
Fobe earns Michigan's third Freshman of the Week honor this season. Classmate Emy Guttman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) was the league's Freshman of the Week on Sept. 6 and Sept. 13.
Michigan returns to action this weekend, with two games in Evanston, Ill. U-M faces Northwestern on Friday (Oct. 7, 3 p.m. CDT) and Yale on Saturday (Oct. 8, Noon CDT).
