ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team fell behind early to visiting Central Michigan and was never able to get back in the game, falling 10-2 to the Chippewas on Wednesday night (April 8) at the Wilpon Baseball Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
The Wolverine offense posted six hits from six different players off a trio of CMU pitchers, with freshman designated hitter Coley Crank(Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley) and late-inning replacement rightfielder Mike Kittle(Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) posting the only runs batted in.
The Chippewas struck first, scoring four times in the second inning off Wolverine freshman starting pitcher Kevin Vangheluwe(St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lake Shore) to take a 4-0 lead. After striking out the CMU leadoff man in the frame, Vangheluwe allowed four straight hits and a walk that chased him from the game in favor of senior reliever Mike Wilson(Pickering, Ontario/Pine Ridge), who recorded the final out.
CMU added a run in the third off Wilson on an RBI double and two more in the sixth off sophomore reliever Matt Miller(Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville), expanding its lead to 7-0.
In the seventh, freshman Brandon Sinnery(Franklin, Mass./Worcester Academy) took to the hill as CMU added to its lead with a three-run inning, pushing its advantage to double digits, 10-0.
The Wolverines got on the board in the bottom of the seventh as sophomore centerfielder Ryan LaMarre(Jackson, Mich./Lumen Christi) led off the inning with a ground-rule double down the rightfield line and later scored on an RBI single from Crank to make it 10-1.
The margin carried through to the ninth when the Wolverines loaded the bases with nobody out as senior second baseman Kevin Cislo(Novi, Mich./Novi) provided a leadoff double to centerfield and later scored on an RBI fielder's choice from Kittle to make the score 10-2. That was as close as the Maize and Blue got, however, as junior Alan Oaks(White Lake, Mich./Divine Child) -- who had come on to pitch the ninth inning after starting the game in rightfield -- grounded into a game-ending 4-6-3 double play.
Vangheluwe took the loss on the mound, falling to 0-1 on theseason as the Wolverines used a total of seven pitchers in the contest. Sophomore Kolby Wood(Eau Claire, Mich./Berrien Springs) fanned a team-high three Chippewas over one-and-two-thirds innings of work for U-M.
The Wolverines return to action Friday (April 10) when they begin a three-game Big Ten series with Illinois at the Wilpon Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. and can be seen live on the Big Ten Network.
