ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team split a pair of games on Wednesday (April 15) with visiting Eastern Michigan University, using an eighth-inning, two-run home run from junior first baseman Mike Dufek(Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain)to win 4-3 in game one before dropping the nightcap, 11-5, at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. Senior leftfielder Kenny Fellows(Holt, Mich./Holt) posted a 3-for-6 day, while sophomore shortstop Anthony Toth(Lorain, Ohio/St. Ignatius) added three total hits and Dufek drove in three runs in game one.
In the opener, Michigan jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first as Fellows provided a leadoff single and later scored on a double by Toth, who provided the second run when he came around on a sacrifice fly by Dufek, giving U-M sophomore starting pitcher Matt Miller(Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) an early cushion.
In a designated staff day for the U-M pitching staff, Miller was relieved in the third by sophomore Kolby Wood(Eau Claire, Mich./Berrien Springs), who surrendered a fourth-inning solo homer, cutting the lead to 2-1.
Wood turned things over to senior Mike Wilson(Pickering, Ontario/Pine Ridge), who was greeted with a two-run homer in the fifththat gave EMU its first lead of the day, 3-2. The homer chased Wilson in favor of freshman Brandon Sinnery(Franklin, Mass./Worcester Academy), who shut down the EMU bats over the next inning and one third, fanning two while allowing just one hit.
Still trailing by one in the eighth and with two down, Dufek stepped to the plate and delivered a two-run homer off the track building in right centerfield to put U-M on top for good, 4-3.
Tyler Burgoon(Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) finished game one, working the final inning and one third, including a perfect final frame to pick up his third win of the season.
In game two, EMU jumped on Michigan junior starting pitcher Jeff DeCarlo(Medford, Mass./St. John's) with a pair of solo homers in the first inning as DeCarlo gave up four runs in just one third of an inning. Sophomore Travis Smith(Austin, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) came on to relieve DeCarlo and worked out of the first-inning jam.
U-M's offense responded with a run in the first and three more in the second on an RBI double by sophomore catcher Chris Berset(Vienna, Va./Heights School, an RBI groundout by junior second baseman Mike Kittle(Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) and an RBI single by Toth, tying the score at 4-4.
Smith found himself in trouble in the third when EMU came back with a run on a solo homer and the Eagles added five more in the fourth, keyed by a two-run homer off freshman reliever Kevin Vangheluwe(St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeshore), taking a 10-4 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning.
Michigan added a run in the fifth inning, but it was not enough as EMU went on to earn a split on the day with an 11-5 game-two victory with Smith taking the loss in relief.
The Maize and Blue will be back in action with their first road game in 17 days on Friday (April 17), traveling to East Lansing, Mich., to take on Michigan State in game one of a three-game weekend series. First pitch between the Wolverines and Spartans is scheduled for 3:05 p.m.
