YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team used an eight-run third inning and the first collegiate victory from freshman pitcher Brandon Sinnery(Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) to defeat Eastern Michigan, 11-3, on Tuesday night (March 17) at Oestrike Stadium.
The Wolverines struck first in the third inning, batting around and scoring eight times, including a pair of doubles in the frame by leadoff man Kevin Cislo(Novi, Mich./Novi) and a two-run double by senior leftfielder Kenny Fellows(Holt, Mich./Holt) to give U-M an 8-0 lead.
The outburst proved more than enough support for Sinnery, who scattered four hits and allowed just two runs over a season-best five innings of work while striking out three.
The Wolverines added a single run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by sophomore shortstop Anthony Toth(Lorain, Ohio./St. Ignatius) and two more in the eighth on a sac fly from Fellows and an RBI single by sophomore centerfielder Ryan LaMarre(Jackson, Mich./Lumen Christi) to cruise to an 11-3 victory.
Senior Mike Wilson(Pickering, Ontario/Pine Ridge), sophomore Tyler Burgoon(Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) and junior Mike Dufek(Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) combined to finish off the Eagles over the next four innings, giving Sinnery (1-0) his first collegiate victory.
Cislo finished the day 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored, while LaMarre also collected two hits and an RBI. Fellows was 1-for-4 but added a team-high three RBI in the win.
The Wolverines are back in action on Friday (March 20) when they make their 2009 home debut against IPFW at the Wilpon Baseball Complex, home of historic Ray Fisher Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m.
