TUCSON, ARIZ. -- The No. 25-ranked Michigan baseball team could not overcome a six-run Arizona third inning, dropping game two of its three-game weekend series with the Wildcats, 9-7, on Saturday night (March 14) at Kindall Field.
Junior/sophomore designated hitter Jake McLouth(Whitehall, Mich./Grand Rapids CC) went 3-for-5 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored, while juniors Mike Dufek(Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) and Nick Urban(Whitehall, Mich./Whitehall) each collected three hits in the loss.
Wolverine starting pitcher Eric Katzman(Harrington Park, N.J./Old Tappan) was chased in the third inning, ironically without allowing a hit, but walking four and hitting three batters. Sophomore Matt Gerbe(Shelby Township, Mich./Eisenhower) came on in relief and was charged with three earned runs to take the loss.
The Wolverine bats got off to a good start, scoring twice in the opening inning on RBI singles from McLouth and Dufek and three more in the third to take a 5-0 lead before the Wildcats put together a six-run third inning that proved to be too much for U-M to overcome.
Sophomore centerfielder Ryan LaMarre(Jackson, Mich./Lumen Christi) was the only other Wolverine with more than one hit, going 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. LaMarre and senior second baseman Kevin Cislo(Novi, Mich./Novi) each extended their team-high hitting streaks to 10 games in the loss.
The Wolverines are back in action on Sunday (March 15) when they wrap up their three-game set against the Wildcats with first pitch slated for 11 a.m. MST.
