ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team used three unanswered goals in the second half to surge past intrastate rival Central Michigan, 5-2, on Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 14) at Phyllis Ocker Field. Junior Kelly Fitzpatrick (Hummelstown, Pa./Palmyra Area HS) and sophomore Meredith Way (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) both posted multi-goal efforts, including one each on the penalty stroke, to pace the Wolverine effort.

With the score knotted at two apiece at halftime, Michigan applied pressure in the second frame, outshooting the Chippewas 16-1 in the half while outcornering them 6-0. Way netted the game-winner -- her second marker of the contest -- off of a broken corner opportunity at the 47:38 mark. After the stick stop failed to keep the ball in the circle, sophomore/freshman Katie Adams (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson HS) chased it down and fired a quick pass to Way, who remained in striking position at the top of the circle. Way then blasted a low shot to beat CMU goalkeeper Melinda Curran on the left side and earn her third multi-goal performance of the season.
The Wolverines followed Way's goal with two more in the subsequent 16 minutes. Fitzpatrick recorded her second marker on a penalty stroke at 50:56 after a CMU defender covered the ball in front of the cage during a Wolverine penalty-corner opportunity. Fitzpatrick tucked her shot inside the right goal post just beyond the reach of Curran's blocker. Senior captain Stephanie Hoyer (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) wrapped up scoring in the contest with an unassisted effort at the 63:37 mark. Hoyer recovered a loose ball deep in the CMU circle and banged in a low shot to the right corner of the cage.
The two squads matched each other goal-for-goal in the opening half, and after each team scored on its first shot of the contest, the score stood at 1-1 after just 2:29 underway. Fitzpatrick converted on a low dribbler near the top of the CMU circle at the 1:25 mark, but the Chippewas responded immediately as Samantha Sandham scored the tying marker on a low shot of her own just a little more than a minute later.
Way put the Wolverines back in front on a successful penalty stroke midway through the half after freshman Bryn Bain (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional HS) was pulled down in front of the cage at 18:25. The Wolverine sophomore, who padded her statistics to a team-leading 12 goals, fired her shot to the lower-left corner of the cage to claim her second penalty-stroke tally of the season.
Central Michigan evened the score in the closing minutes of the half on a redirection along the left goalpost by Paulina Lee. Sandham carried the ball into the circle to initiate the play before dishing it off to the far post where Lee one-timed it into the cage at 30:07.
Michigan boasted significant advantages in shots (27-5) and penalty corners (8-2). Senior/junior goalkeeper Paige Pickett (Dallas, Texas/Episcopal School of Dallas) earned one save in the U-M cage for her third win of the season, while Curran stopped 14 of the Wolverines' 19 shots on goal.
The Wolverines will return to action on Friday (Oct. 17) with a Big Ten Conference contest against No. 4 Michigan State. The match is slated for a 3 p.m. start at Phyllis Ocker Field.
