BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 20-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team secured its fourth consecutive victory with a 1-0 triumph against No. 11 Indiana on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 15) at John Mellencamp Pavilion. Senior/junior Kristen Tiner (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) tallied the only goal, scoring off a penalty corner late in the first half, and senior goalkeeper Beth Riley (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS) earned three saves in the U-M cage for her second shutout win of the season.
The Wolverines (9-7, 3-1 Big Ten) handed Indiana its first Big Ten loss of the season to pull themselves back into contention for the regular-season conference title. The Hoosiers (13-3, 3-1) had been the lone unbeaten team in league play. Michigan has downed IU in six of the last seven meetings, including four straight in Bloomington.
Tiner's goal, scored on the Wolverines' final penalty corner opportunity of the opening frame, was a direct shot from the top of the IU scoring circle. Tiner rocketed a shot to the lower corner of the cage and past a sprawling Hoosier goalkeeper Haley Exner to put the Wolverines ahead for good at 26:12. It was her third tally of the season and her second game-winner. Junior Jillianne Whitfield (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor HS) and senior Mary Fox (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) were credited with assists for the stop and push, respectively.
The two squads each posted seven shots in the contest -- U-M put six on the IU cage -- while the Michigan slightly outcornered the Hoosiers 6-5. Riley was perfect in goal for the Wolverines with three stops, including a pair of key saves in the second half, while Exner made five saves for Indiana.
The Wolverines will return home to Ann Arbor to host Virginia Commonwealth in a non-conference affair Thursday (Oct. 19) at Ocker Field. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
