PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- The Big Ten Conference announced today (Saturday, Oct. 29) that the University of Michigan women's soccer team will be the No. 8 seed when it hosts the Big Ten Women's Soccer Tournament on Thursday, Friday and Sunday, Nov. 3-4-6. The Wolverines (7-8-2, 3-6-1 Big Ten) will face No. 1 seed Penn State in the first round on Thursday (Nov. 3) at 7:30 p.m. at the U-M Soccer Field. Michigan lost to the undefeated Nittany Lions in the teams' regular-season matchup (Oct. 21) by a score of 4-2.
Penn State earned the No. 1 seed for the second consecutive season with its second straight 10-0-0 mark in Big Ten play. Other quarterfinal pairings on Thursday have No. 3 seed Michigan State (6-2-2 Big Ten) playing No. 6 seed Indiana (3-6-1) at 10:30 a.m., No. 2 seed Purdue (7-2-1 Big Ten) meeting No. 7 seed Wisconsin (3-6-1) at 1:30 p.m., and No. 4 seed Illinois (6-3-1) matching up against No. 5 seed Minnesota (6-4-0) at 4:30 p.m.
Michigan finished in a three-way tie for sixth place in the Big Ten, but losses to Indiana and Wisconsin propelled both schools past the Wolverines in the seeding process.
The semifinals will be played Friday (Nov. 4) at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and the tournament championship game is scheduled for noon Sunday (Nov. 6). The tournament winner will receive the Big Ten's automatic bid for the 64-team NCAA Championship.
Michigan, which will likely need to win the Big Ten Tournament title to earn its ninth straight NCAA berth, has played well at home this season, posting a 4-3-2 record at home, including an impressive 4-1-1 record under the lights.
