Memorial Service, Scholarship Established for Townsend

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A memorial service for former University of Michigan field hockey player Rachael (Geisthardt) Townsend, who played for the Wolverines from 1992-95, has been scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at Saline High School. Townsend, who was a four-year letterwinner as a goalkeeper for the Wolverines, passed away suddenly on Sunday (Oct. 12) after finishing the Chicago Marathon. The Rev. Terry Smith, father of former U-M field hockey player Sherene (Smith) Halko, will preside over the service.
The Townsend family has also established a memorial scholarship fund in Rachael's name with the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation. The monies donated to the scholarship will go to benefit one of Rachael's passions. Those compelled to make a donation to the scholarship fund may do so by mailing a check, made out to the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation, to the following address:
