ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team got its first win of the season with a 1-0 shutout win over Dayton in a steady downpour Sunday (Sept. 9) at U-M Soccer Field.
There was little action for the first 20 minutes of the game as both teams combined for just three shots. U-M appeared to be the first team to adjust to the rain as team captain Andrea Kayal (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hill HS) headed the ball past Dayton goalkeeper Stephanie Weisenfeld on U-M's second shot for the lone goal, in the 34th minute. Midfielder Amy Sullivant (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower HS) assisted on the play. Michigan continued pressing hard and managed four more shots before the end of the half.
Dayton turned things around to start the second half, managing five shots on goal, and it appeared the Flyers were on the verge of scoring until the game was delayed due to lightning at the 22-minute mark. Both teams took cover in the Wolverine team building while fans hurried to their cars. The storm passed after 15 minutes, but the rain did not let up for the return of the players.
Still soaked after the break, the Wolverines played tight defense and held off the Flyers' six-shot attack up through the last minute of play. Michigan's only other scoring chance came on a breakaway from freshman Liz Dosa (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont HS), who is filling in for injured forward Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS), but she was unable to score.
Suzie Grech (Narbeth, Pa./The Shipley School) recorded her first shutout of the season and fourth of her career. Grech made 10 saves against Dayton and is now 1-1.
The Wolverines are back on the road next weekend as they head east to take on Hartford (Sept. 14, 7 p.m.) and Connecticut (Sept. 16, 1 p.m.).

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On the team's first win ... "We got the win. We got that monkey off our back, but it wasn't the best dsiplay of soccer I have ever seen."
On Michigan's overall performance ... "We found a way to win, which is a big step. Keeping a 1-0 lead is difficult. This was a good lesson."
On the upcoming weekend ... "This weekend will be huge for us. Both teams are excellent."
U-M Junior Andrea Kayal
On her goal ... "I work hard on that play in practice. I have been working on scoring off of indirect kicks. Amy (Sullivant) found my head and I put it in."
On the rain ... "It's not really a factor for us. We have always had to play in the rain. You get used to it."
