ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team earned its first victory of the 2000 campaign with a convincing 7-0 win over No. 12 Missouri on Sunday (Sept. 10) in the Michigan Nike Invitational. After scoring one goal in its first three games, Michigan blasted five first-half goals en route to the victory and a weekend split. In Sunday's other game of the Michigan Nike Invitational, Washington defeated Ohio State 3-1.
The Wolverines' offensive explosion began at 3:36 of the first half when freshman Amber Wilson (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West HS) netted her first career goal as she blasted the ball off a Missouri defender and into the net. The second goal was scored by senior Marie Spaccarotella (Livonia, Mich./Churchill HS) at 13:53 of the first half. Wilson added her third point with an assist on the Spaccarotella score.
Adding to Michigan's first-half offensive prowess was freshman Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS), who earned her first goal as a Wolverine after a pass from Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) at the 19:28 mark. Crumpton netted Michigan's fourth goal of the half at 28:30, streaking past the Missouri defender for a breakaway. Sophomore defender Amy Sullivant (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower HS) added an unassisted tally at 33:13 and the Wolverines led 5-0 at halftime.
Michigan's dominance continued in the second half as Crumpton netted her second goal of the afternoon at 55:55, with the assists going to senior captain Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) and Spaccarotella. Wilson then scored her second goal of the game in the 86th minute, with the assist to Carly Williamson (Barrington, R.I./Barrington HS), to round out the Wolverine scoring.
Freshman Suzie Grech (Narbeth, Pa./The Shipley School) earned her first shutout as a Wolverine, stopping two shots.
The Wolverines open their Big Ten Conference season next weekend as they travel to Purdue (Sept. 15) and Indiana (Sept. 17).
