COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The eighth-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team advanced to the Big Ten Tournament championship game by defeating No. 4 Penn State 2-1 in double overtime on Saturday (Nov. 6). Michigan (16-6), the No. 3 seed, will face top-seeded and No. 3-ranked Iowa for the conference crown tomorrow (Sunday, Nov. 7) at 1 p.m.
After battling to a 1-1 tie in regulation play, the two teams traded chances in overtime, but U-M senior co-captain Ashley Reichenbach (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra HS) ended the game on a penalty stroke with 12:23 remaining in the second extra session. The goal was Reichenbach's third of the season, all coming on penalty strokes.
Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) scored the first goal of the game just 52 seconds into the second half with Catherine Foreman (Happy Valley, South Australia/Westminster School) assisting on the play. The Wolverines held the lead for nearly 22 minutes but Penn State (17-4) managed to send the game to overtime as Maegan Galie scored an unassisted goal with 11:18 remaining in regulation time.
The game was a defensive battle as the two teams combined for just 21 shots (11 by Michigan) and goaltenders were forced to make just 11 saves, including six by U-M's Kati Oakes (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS).
This is the first time in the last seven tries Michigan has defeated Penn State, and the win puts the Maize and Blue in the tournament championship game for the third consecutive year. The Wolverines are looking for their first Big Ten Tournament championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
