Wolverines Sweep Big Red, Led By Burke's Serving

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team swept Cornell (25-16, 25-12, 25-14) on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 19) in Cliff Keen Arena.
Michigan (8-2) executed an efficient attack throughout the match, finishing with a .376 hitting percentage as a team compared to Cornell's .093, led by Ella Demetrician with a match-high 15 kills on 24 attempts while committing just one error, finishing with a .583 attack percentage. Cymarah Gordon added 13 kills and four blocks while Sydney Schnichels recorded 12 kills with a .435 hitting percentage. Morgan Burke orchestrated the offense with 24 assists and added five service aces and eight digs. Libero Meredith Martin paced the defense with a team-high 16 digs. Ece Senyapici tallied five blocks in the match.
Cornell (4-4) started the match in front, leading 3-1 and 7-4, and held the lead until 13-12. A block from Gordon and Jenna Hanes tied the match at 12 before a Big Red attack error gave Michigan its first lead since 4-3. The Wolverines took two of the next three points with kills from Demetrician and Schnichels to lead 15-13 at the media timeout. The teams sided out in each of the next points until a 17-16 lead for the Wolverines. A kill from Schnichels brought Burke to the service line, and she started with an ace as part of an 8-0 run to close the first set. On the run, Gordon and Schnichels each tallied three kills, and an attack error ended the set 25-16.
The second set saw two early ties at 1-1 and 5-5 before a kill and ace from Demetrician put Michigan up 7-5. U-M led for the rest of the set, helped by a 9-0 run by Burke at the service line, which saw three aces over the span. Cornell got three points back, but the Wolverines countered with a 4-0 run to take a 22-10 lead. After two points from the Big Red, Michigan took the final three, including a kill from Kapri Garnett, to win 25-12.
U-M opened the third set on a 3-1 run, but Cornell took the lead at 4-3. Michigan retook the lead with kills from Demetrician and Gordon and kept the Big Red at bay for the rest of the set. The Wolverines had a 6-0 run, with Burke again at the service line, to extend their lead to 18-10. Cornell mustered only four more points in the set as Michigan cruised to a 25-14 set victory, with the late run highlighted by Megan Ingersoll's first career kill.
Michigan will return to action on Sunday (Sept. 20) at Cliff Keen Arena, once again against Cornell at 1 p.m. The match will be streamed live on B1G+.
