Wolverines Pull Away from Eastern Michigan to Win in Four

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team defeated Eastern Michigan 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-20, 25-12) on Thursday night (Sept. 17) at Crisler Center.
Ella Demetrician led the Michigan (7-2) offense with 23 kills on a .340 hitting percentage and added 11 digs. Sydney Schnichels recorded her first career double-double, tallying 11 kills and 10 digs while hitting .429. Cymarah Gordon contributed 10 kills and three blocks, while Ece Senyapici added eight kills on a .545 hitting percentage and three blocks. Morgan Burke paced the Michigan offense with 31 assists and served two aces. Defensively, Meredith Martin anchored Michigan with a team-high 18 digs, while Jenna Hanes tallied a match-high four blocks.
Eastern Michigan (6-5) hung with the Wolverines early in the first set as the teams split the first 18 points. Kills from Demetrician and Lydia Johnson, along with an attack error, put U-M up 12-9. Senyapici recorded a kill to make it 15-11 at the first-set technical timeout. Michigan scored five of the next seven points to take a 20-14 lead, highlighted by two kills from Gordon. The Eagles were unable to rally as an ace from Burke sealed the first set 25-18.
The second set was tight early before the Eagles took a 12-8 lead. U-M rallied to tie the set at 16, highlighted by an ace from Camille Edwards. EMU scored the next three points, but the Wolverines pulled even again at 21 following an attack error. Michigan tied the set at 22 on a kill from Gordon and again at 23 before the Eagles scored the final two points for a 25-23 win.
U-M started the third set strong, opening on an 8-2 run that featured two kills apiece from Demetrician and Gordon along with an ace from Schnichels. EMU responded with five straight points to cut the Wolverine lead to one and force a timeout. Out of the timeout, Hanes recorded a kill and a block to keep Michigan in front. The Wolverines extended their lead to 15-9 at the third-set technical timeout. EMU scored four straight points out of the timeout, but U-M answered with three straight, highlighted by a kill and a block from Senyapici. Michigan extended its advantage to 21-14 on a Demetrician kill before the Eagles cut the lead to three at 23-20. Johnson and Hanes combined for a block to reach set point, and Schnichels finished off the 25-20 set win with a kill.
Eastern Michigan started strong in the fourth set, forcing an early Michigan timeout with a 7-4 lead. The Wolverines tied the set at eight, nine and 10 before taking an 11-10 lead on an ace from Burke. EMU pulled even at 11, but Michigan closed the match on a 14-1 run, with Demetrician recording four kills and a block during the stretch. A kill from Hanes clinched the set 25-12 and the match 3-1.
Michigan will return to action on Saturday (Sept. 19) against Cornell at noon at Cliff Keen Arena. The match will stream live on B1G+.
