Wolverines to Return Home, Close Out Non-Conference Play With Three-Match Weekend

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team (6-2) returns home after two weekends on the road to close out non-conference play, beginning the weekend with a matchup against Eastern Michigan on Thursday (Sept. 17) at 7 p.m. in Crisler Center. The Wolverines then will face Cornell twice at Cliff Keen Arena on Saturday (Sept. 19) at noon and Sunday (Sept. 20) at 1 p.m. All three matches will be streamed live on B1G+.
Notes
• The Wolverines hold a 6-2 record after splitting two matches at the South Florida Invitational. U-M dropped a four-set match to No. 11-ranked TCU but swept host South Florida. U-M went 2-0 at the Valpo Popcorn Classic the previous weekend and owns home wins over LIU, Miami and LSU this season.
• Cymarah Gordon tallied her first 20-plus kill match on Friday (Sept. 11) against TCU. Gordon recorded 22 kills on 39 swings with just one error. This season, Gordon holds a 3.76 kills-per-set mark, which ranks fifth in the Big Ten, and has recorded 109 total kills to rank third in the conference. Her hitting percentage of .382 ranks 13th in the conference and 69th nationally.
• With 50 assists over the weekend, Morgan Burke sits seventh in program history with 2,640, surpassing Tarnisha Thompson (2,619). Burke has 193 assists this season, averaging 6.66 per set. She has three double-doubles this year with 59 digs overall. The senior is now 360 assists from becoming the seventh Wolverine to reach 3,000 career assists. Burke and Camille Edwards have helped U-M to a 13.62 assists-per-set mark that leads the Big Ten and sits seventh nationally.
• Sydney Schnichels hit .500 in Michigan's three-set victory over South Florida, recording 11 kills on 20 attacks while adding eight digs, two blocks and an ace. Schnichels is third on the team with 58 kills this season on a .219 hitting percentage. The senior played in 16 matches last year and 44 sets, but has started all eight matches so far this year, playing in 27 of 29 sets.
• Ella Demetrician leads the Wolverines in kills this season, boasting 110 with a 3.79 average. Both marks rank in the top three of the Big Ten, while her 4.28 points per set ranks seventh in the conference. Demetrician is hitting .225 this season, up .011 from last season, with her kills-per-set average up by 0.92 over her sophomore year.
• Meredith Martin leads the Big Ten in digs per set, averaging 4.17, ranking 10th among NCAA freshmen. She has tallied double-digit digs in seven straight matches and broke 20 digs in both matches at the Valpo Popcorn Classic while leading U-M in digs in both matches at the South Florida Invitational. Martin has 121 digs this season with 39 assists and six aces.
• Ece Senyapici has been the team's best blocker this season, recording 35 total blocks with three or more in every match. She tallied eight blocks at Valparaiso on Sept. 6 and added seven blocks at the South Florida Invitational. Senyapici has added 27 kills and 12 digs this season.
• Jenna Hanes holds a .489 hitting percentage this season with 48 kills on 90 swings with only four errors. The junior tallied 10 kills in the South Florida Invitational and set the third-best single-match hitting percentage mark at .737 earlier this season against South Carolina. Hanes has seven aces, 18 blocks and 29 digs.
• Lydia Johnson ranks fourth on the team in kills with 49, averaging 1.69 over her 29 sets played. Johnson is one of seven Wolverines to play in every set but has not started a match this season. The senior has tallied 292 kills in her career with a .236 hitting percentage.
• Camille Edwards tallied 32 assists and 14 digs at the South Florida Invitational and has racked up 137 assists this season. She is tied for the team lead in aces with 11 and has added 41 digs. Edwards has reached double-digit assists in every match with a season high of 22 while leading the team in one match so far this season.
• Eastern Michigan is 6-4 this season, winning all three matches at the season-opening USI Invitational before going 2-1 at the Chick-fil-A Robinson Classic and dropping a five-set match to Illinois State. Last weekend, EMU swept Montana but lost to UAB and Oakland at the Golden Grizzly Invitational. Michigan is 37-15 all-time against the Eagles, winning the last 16, with 15 sweeps in those matches.
• Cornell holds a 3-3 record so far this season, winning its opening match against Howard before five-set losses to Albany and Syracuse in the Cornell Invitational. Last weekend, the Big Red dropped a five-set match to Binghamton before beating Temple and New Haven. This will be the first time the teams have faced one another.
