Michigan Caps Non-Conference Play With Sweep of Cornell

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team took down Cornell in straight sets (25-19, 25-22, 25-15) on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 20) at Cliff Keen Arena to close out non-conference play.
Michigan (9-2) was led by a double-double from Ella Demetrician, who recorded 17 kills and 10 digs. Cymarah Gordon recorded 10 kills, while Sydney Schnichels added eight. Morgan Burke set up the offense with 21 assists, and Camille Edwards contributed 15, with each adding two of the team's six aces. As a team, Michigan hit .327, totaling 46 kills and 13 errors on 101 attacks. Defensively, Meredith Martin gathered nine digs for Michigan. Jenna Hanes and Ece Senyapici each produced five blocks, while Lydia Johnson chipped in four.
Cornell (4-5) battled with the Wolverines early in the first set, but a 7-2 run beginning with a kill from Schnichels at 7-7 put Michigan up 14-9. Demetrician and Gordon both added two kills during the run. The Big Red used a 4-0 run to cut the Wolverine lead to two at 17-15, but a service error ended the surge. An ace from Burke put Michigan up four at 20-16 before kills from Demetrician and Hanes closed out the first set 25-19.
Cornell opened the second set on a 5-1 run and held onto the lead through the media timeout despite a 4-0 Michigan run. Burke recorded her second ace during the run, while Schnichels added a kill and a block as the Wolverines pulled within one at 12-11. Michigan tied the set at 15 and took the lead two points later on a kill from Demetrician. The Big Red pulled even at 17 and 18, but Michigan moved back in front on a block assist from Johnson and Hanes. A kill from Senyapici put the Wolverines up 21-19 before Cornell tied the set at 21. U-M took four of the final five points, with an ace from Schnichels reaching set point and a Demetrician kill clinching the 25-22 win.
After the teams traded the first four points of the third set, Michigan went on a 5-0 run and did not trail again. Demetrician tallied three kills over the first eight points before Schnichels recorded three straight to put the Wolverines up 12-6. Michigan later added another 5-0 run, with Demetrician contributing three kills and a block during the stretch. An ace from Hanes put Michigan at set point, and three points later, a Cornell service error gave U-M the third set 25-15 and the match 3-0.
Michigan will return to action on Friday (Sept. 25) at Crisler Center, opening Big Ten play against No. 9-ranked Penn State at 7 p.m. The match will stream live on B1G+.
