Burke, Gordon Not Enough as Michigan Falls to No. 11 TCU

TAMPA, Fla. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team dropped a hard-fought four-set (19-25, 23-25, 25-17, 23-25) match to No. 11-ranked TCU at the Corral on Friday afternoon (Sept. 11) in the South Florida Invitational.
Michigan (5-2) was led by a career-high 22 kills from Cymarah Gordon, who hit .538 with just one error on 39 swings. Morgan Burke matched her career high of six aces and tallied a double-double with 24 assists and 11 digs. Ella Demetrician and Sydney Schnichels combined for 23 kills and 18 digs. Libero Meredith Martin led the team in digs, matching a career high with eight assists.
TCU (5-2) took the first point of the match, but Ece Senyapici tied it with a kill. The Horned Frogs then went on a short 3-0 run and worked out to a 10-5 lead before taking a 15-8 advantage to reach the technical timeout. Out of the timeout, U-M went on a 6-1 run to cut the lead to two, led by two kills and an ace from Jenna Hanes. The teams traded the next few points until back-to-back kills from Demetrician and Hanes brought Michigan to within one at 19-18. TCU finished the set on a 6-1 run to take the first set 25-19.
The Wolverines started strong in the second set, going up 3-1 behind an ace from Martin. TCU countered with a 6-0 run for a 9-5 lead, but Michigan responded with a 4-1 run to bring that match back to one point, led by a kill and block from Schnichels. The Horned Frogs took the next four points, leading 15-10 at the technical timeout. U-M took five of the next seven points to cut into the TCU lead, but could not tie the match. TCU worked another run to take a 22-16 lead, but Michigan responded with a 5-0 run to bring the score to 22-21. A kill from Schnichels and Gordon brought the set to within one twice more, but TCU stayed in front and won the second set 25-23.
In the third set, the teams traded points to start until a 6-0 Michigan run put the Wolverines up 13-8. On the run, Burke tallied three straight aces. TCU brought the set to within two, but U-M put together another 6-0 run -- this time led by two kills from Demetrician and an ace from Camille Edwards. Michigan held off TCU with a block assist from Schnichels and Senyapici to reach set point and an ace from Burke to clinch the third set 25-17.
The fourth set was a battle, with nine ties and two lead changes. TCU got out to a small lead at 8-5, but Burke's sixth ace and another kill from Gordon tied the match at eight. After two straight points from the Horned Frogs, Michigan took four straight, led by two kills from Gordon and an ace from Schnichels, to take a 12-10 lead. The Wolverines extended their lead to 16-12, but TCU rattled off four straight and seven of nine to take a 19-18 lead. TCU errors allowed Michigan to tie the match at 19 and 20 before a Gordon kill tied the match at 21. The Horned Frogs scored the next two points and took the match four points later, winning the fourth set 25-23.
Michigan will return to action on Saturday (Sept. 12) at the South Florida Invitational against host South Florida at 6 p.m. in Tampa, Fla., at the Corral.
