Wolverines Sweep Host Bulls on Second Day of South Florida Invitational

TAMPA, Fla. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team swept South Florida (26-24, 25-23, 25-20) on Saturday night (Sept. 12) at the Corral on day two of the South Florida Invitational.
Michigan (6-2) was led offensively by Ella Demetrician, who tallied 14 kills, while Sydney Schnichels recorded 11 kills on a .500 hitting percentage, adding eight digs. Cymarah Gordon registered 10 kills and Morgan Burke paced the Wolverines in assists with 26. Meredith Martin topped U-M in digs with 11.
South Florida (1-7) got out to an early lead in the first set and forced a Michigan timeout at 7-3. Out of the timeout, U-M went on a 5-1 run to tie the set at eight, led by a kill and block from Schnichels. The Bulls stayed in front and reestablished a lead, going up 15-10. The Wolverines fought back again with a 6-1 run, this time led by two kills from Gordon. USF prevented Michigan from taking the lead at 16-16, 17-17 and 19-19, but after a kill from Demetrician tied the set at 20, Schnichels and Ece Senyapici combined on a block to put U-M in front. The teams traded points until Michigan took the final two of the set with a Demetrician kill at 25-24 and a USF error to clinch the first set 26-24.
The teams battled early in the second set with U-M going up 3-0 before USF scored the next four points to take the lead. After a tie at 5-5, South Florida scored eight of the next 10 points to go up 12-7, but the Wolverines stayed in the set and tied it at 14 after back-to-back kills from Schnichels. Michigan retook the lead at 19-18 after a kill from Gordon and a USF attack error, respectively. A South Florida kill tied the set at 19, but kills from Lydia Johnson and Schnichels put Michigan up 21-19. U-M added to its lead with two more kills, one each from the same duo to take a 23-20 lead. The Bulls took three of the next four points, but an attack error gave the Wolverines the second set 25-23.
U-M opened the third set with a 7-2 lead, ignited by three kills from Demetrician. USF chipped away at the lead and tied the match at 11 and took a 13-11 lead. The Wolverines tied it at 13, then took the lead at 15-14 after a USF error. South Florida tied the match at 15, but Michigan used a 6-1 run to take a 21-16 lead, featuring an ace and a kill from Demetrician. USF took the next three points to force a U-M timeout, but the Wolverines took the next three out of the timeout, with a kill from Schnichels putting Michigan at match point. After an attack error, Schnichels finished off the match with U-M winning the third set 25-20.
Michigan will return to action at 7 p.m. on Thursday (Sept. 17) against Eastern Michigan at Crisler Center. The match will be streamed live on B1G+.
