Wolverines Fall to Washington in Straight Sets

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team fell in straight sets to undefeated Washington (23-25, 21-25, 22-25) on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 27) at Crisler Center.
Ella Demetrician paced Michigan (9-4, 0-2 Big Ten) with a match-high 18 kills on 34 swings, hitting .353, and added seven digs. Sydney Schnichels and Jenna Hanes each recorded five kills. Morgan Burke and Camille Edwards split the setting duties, providing 18 and 16 assists, respectively. Meredith Martin anchored the back line with 12 digs, while Ece Senyapici posted four kills and three block assists.
Washington (11-0, 2-0 Big Ten) trailed early but tied the first set at five with back-to-back aces. The teams battled back and forth, with Washington taking a 9-8 lead before kills from Demetrician and Schnichels put the Wolverines back in front, 11-9. Michigan held a 15-13 lead at the media timeout and took the next four points out of the timeout, including a block from Lydia Johnson and Hanes.
Washington responded by taking nine of the next 12 points, tying the set at 22 and forcing a Michigan timeout. The Huskies took the next two points out of the timeout and went on to win the set 25-23.
In the second set, Washington jumped out to a 6-2 lead, but the Wolverines responded and tied the set at seven. The Huskies pulled away, taking five of the next six points to lead 12-8, and held a four-point advantage at the technical timeout, 15-11. Michigan tried to chip away at the Washington lead but managed back-to-back points only once after the timeout as the Huskies took the second set 25-21.
The teams were even early in the third set, with seven ties through 10-10 before a service error and service ace put Washington ahead 12-10. Michigan stayed within two points until a 3-0 Huskies run after the technical timeout gave Washington an 18-13 lead. The Wolverines used two kills and a block from Johnson to cut the Huskies' lead to one, but a Washington kill kept U-M from pulling even.
Michigan again pulled within one at 20-19, but a Wolverine error restored Washington's two-point advantage. The Huskies reached match point at 24-20, and two kills from Demetrician kept the Wolverines alive before Washington converted on its third opportunity to win the set 25-22.
Michigan will return to action Friday (Oct. 2) against USC at Galen Center in Los Angeles. The match is scheduled for 8 p.m. PT and will air live on Big Ten Network.
