TOLEDO, Ohio -- The University of Michigan baseball team battled back early and held off a late push to secure a 6-4 victory over Toledo on Tuesday night (April 14) at Fifth Third Field.
Michigan (21-15) fell behind 2-0 in the opening inning but responded with steady offense to reclaim control. Colby Turner sparked U-M in the third inning with a one-out double before scoring on Evan Haeger's single to put the Wolverines on the board.
In the next inning, capitalizing on patience at the plate as three of the first four batters drew walks. Josh Campbell came home on a wild pitch, and Turner crossed the plate again on a single from Noah Miller to give Michigan a 3-2 advantage.
Toledo (16-20) struck early with two runs in the first, but Michigan starter Erik Puodziunas settled in, holding the Rockets hitless over the next 3.1 innings while striking out five. Gavin DeVooght (1-3) entered in relief and recorded two quick strikeouts to get out of the fourth inning.
The Wolverines added to their lead in the sixth, taking advantage of defensive miscues to plate two runs. Turner scored his third run of the game, and Miller added another to push the lead to 5-2. Toledo answered with a run in the bottom half and threatened further damage, but Brandon Mann entered with the bases loaded and induced a flyout to end the inning.
The Rockets made it one-run game -- scoring after a triple in the seventh, but Brayden Jefferis hit his first career home run down the left field line in the eighth to get the run back. Cade Montgomery entered with one out in the seventh and retired all eight batters he faced, including four strikeouts, to secure the save and Wolverine win.
Jefferis led the offense by reaching base in all five plate appearances, highlighted by his milestone home run. Turner continued his standout stretch with two doubles and three runs scored, while Miller added two hits and a run.
Michigan will return home Wednesday (April 15) to begin a nine-game homestand, hosting Eastern Michigan at 4 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. The game will stream on B1G+.
