
Michigan Sweeps Notre Dame in First Match of Home-and-Home With Irish

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team swept Notre Dame (25-22, 25-22, 25-17) on Friday night (Sept. 19) at Purcell Pavilion in the opener of a home-and-home series against the Irish.
Michigan (8-1) was led by Allison Jacobs, who tallied 12 kills on a .400 hitting percentage. Ella Demetrician also recorded double-digit kills and added four digs. Lydia Johnson hit .500 with eight kills on 14 swings and added two blocks. Michigan's middles, Jenna Hanes and Serena Nyambio, combined for 12 kills on 24 swings with seven blocks and seven digs. Morgan Burke recorded a double-double in the match with 15 assists and 11 digs.
Notre Dame (3-3) got the first point of the match and later led 6-3 early. Kills from Hanes and Demetrician brought U-M within one, but the Irish took a 11-6 lead. Michigan cut the lead to two after a 3-0 run, which saw a kill from Johnson and a solo block from Demetrician. After two Irish points, the Wolverines went on an 8-1 run, led by three kills from Jacobs and an ace from Maddi Cuchran. Michigan kept the lead after that, adding another four-point run to take a 21-15 lead. Notre Dame tried to come back, cutting the Michigan lead to two, but a service error gave U-M the set 25-22.
The second set started out as an early battle with multiple ties until back-to-back Michigan points after a tie at six. U-M went on a 6-2 run to take a 12-9 lead, led by four kills from Demetrician. After a trade of points, Michigan took a commanding eight-point lead, 18-10, with a 5-0 run with Ellie White at the service line. White recorded two aces, and Cymarah Gordon and Hanes recorded a block. Michigan brought the lead up to 20-12 with a Jacobs kill and block from Hanes before Notre Dame tried to come back. The Irish went on a 9-2 run to get within one at 22-21. A kill from Nyambio kept Michigan in front, but the Irish took the next point. An Irish service error gave Michigan set point, and a kill from Jacobs finished off the second set 25-22.
Back-to-back Johnson kills opened the third set, and Michigan kept the lead for the rest of the set. After a kill from Jacobs put U-M up 3-0, Notre Dame took the next two points, but a Nyambio kill kept Michigan in front. The teams traded points until a 5-0 run from Michigan with Burke at the service line pushed the advantage to 12-6. Notre Dame took the next two points, but a service run by Demetrician and two blocks by Nyambio increased the Michigan lead to 17-8. The Irish took the next three points, but U-M answered with four of the next five, including White's third ace of the match. Notre Dame once again tried to rally, cutting the U-M lead to 23-17, but it was cut short by Demetrician. An Irish attack error ended the match with Michigan winning the third set 25-17.
The Wolverines will return to Crisler Center on Sunday (Sept. 21) to finish their series against Notre Dame. Start time is slated for 3 p.m. and the match will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
