LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team fell in straight sets to UCLA (12-25, 27-29, 26-28) on Saturday night (Oct. 4) at Pauley Pavilion, wrapping up its West Coast trip.
Michigan (10-5, 1-3 Big Ten) was once again led by Ella Demetrician, who tallied 14 kills in the match and added two aces and seven digs. Morgan Burke and Ellie White set the Wolverine offense, combining for 39 assists and 10 digs. Meredith Martin led the match with 19 digs.
UCLA (11-4, 2-2 Big Ten) trailed 4-3 in the first set after an ace from Hannah Brady but used a 6-0 run to take an 8-4 lead and force an early Michigan timeout. The Bruins added to their lead with a 5-0 run before the technical timeout to lead 15-7. Michigan could not rally as UCLA took 10 of the final 15 points to win the opening set 25-12.
The second set started in similar fashion, with Michigan going up 4-2, but a 6-0 Bruins run put them up 8-4 and forced a Wolverine timeout. However, out of the timeout, Michigan hung around, taking the first two points with a kill from Hanes and an ace from Demetrician. A 4-0 run, beginning at 12-10, put the Wolverines ahead, led by two kills and a block from Gordon. UCLA retook the lead, going up 16-14 before earning a five-point advantage at 20-15. U-M used an 8-3 run to tie the match at 23 and reached their first set-point chance with a kill from Demetrician. UCLA stopped the first, and Demetrician recorded another kill, but a Wolverine error knotted the match at 25. Johnson and Hanes gave Michigan their third set-point chance, and a UCLA service error was Michigan's fourth chance, but UCLA took the final three points of the set to win 29-27.
In the third set, UCLA took a 4-3 lead and held it through the media timeout, but the Wolverines stayed close, only trailing by at most three points. After the media timeout, two Bruins errors tied the match at 15, and after UCLA took a 17-16 lead, Michigan used a kill from Gordon, a UCLA error and an ace from Demetrician to take a 19-17 lead. UCLA forced a Michigan timeout after tying the set at 21, but an attack error kept Michigan in front. The Bruins took the next three points, but a kill from Demetrician and an attack error retied the match at 24. After two more set-point chances, UCLA finished off the match, winning the third set 28-26.
Michigan will return home to take on Iowa on Friday (Oct. 10) at 7 p.m. inside Crisler Center. The match will be streamed live on B1G+.
