ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team defeated Iowa in four sets (25-17, 25-22, 23-25, 25-13) on Friday (Oct. 9) at Crisler Center for its first home conference win of the season.
Michigan (11-5, 2-3 Big Ten) finished the match hitting .376 with 60 kills on 125 attempts, led by Ella Demetrician's 17 kills and 12 digs. Cymarah Gordon contributed 16 kills on .500 hitting with six blocks, while Sydney Schnichels added 12 kills on .417 hitting. Setter Morgan Burke dished out 28 assists and Camille Edwards added 17 assists to guide the attack. Defensively, the Wolverines collected 15.5 team blocks, with Ece Senyapici matching her career high with eight blocks and Jenna Hanes adding six blocks to go with six kills. Meredith Martin tallied 11 digs and five assists from the back row.
Iowa (12-7, 1-4 Big Ten) and Michigan traded points early in the first set, with neither team holding a lead larger than three through the technical timeout. The Wolverines used a 5-0 run to extend a 16-14 advantage to 21-14 behind Burke's serving and kills from three different players. A service ace by Edwards closed out the opening set at 25-17 for the Wolverines, who hit .594 with 19 kills and no errors in the frame.
The second set featured six ties and one lead change. With the teams tied at eight, the Wolverines used a 6-2 run, led by an ace from Burke and a kill and block from Demetrician, to take a 15-10 lead. Iowa leveled the score at 19-19, but Michigan answered with back-to-back kills from Demetrician and Schnichels to regain the lead. A block from Senyapici and Schnichels extended the advantage before Gordon delivered Michigan's 23rd and 24th points. Schnichels capped the 25-22 set victory with a kill off an assist from Hanes.
The third set was the most tightly contested, featuring 14 ties and two lead changes. With the score tied at 11, a 5-0 Wolverine run highlighted by solo blocks from Hanes and Schnichels put Michigan ahead 16-11. Iowa responded with a 6-1 run to tie the set at 17-17. The Hawkeyes eventually moved ahead 23-22 before a Schnichels kill tied the set at 23, but Iowa secured the final two points for a 25-23 win.
Michigan controlled the fourth set from the start, racing out to a 10-2 lead with a 6-0 run behind Martin's serving and three blocks from Gordon. Iowa answered with a 5-0 run to cut Michigan's lead to 13-8, but a service error and Demetrician kill put U-M ahead 15-8 at the technical timeout. The Hawkeyes managed only five more points as Michigan held Iowa to a .000 hitting percentage and totaled 7.5 team blocks in the set. Gordon delivered three late kills, including the match-winning point, to close out the set 25-13.
Michigan returns to action at Crisler Center on Saturday (Oct. 10), hosting No. 13 Oregon at 7 p.m. The match will stream live on B1G+.
