ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team swept Notre Dame (25-23, 25-22, 25-21) on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 21) at Crisler Center to close out non-conference play.
Michigan (10-1) was led by Serena Nyambio, who tied her career high with seven blocks and added five kills on nine swings. Allison Jacobs and Ella Demetrician paced the Wolverines with 12 kills apiece, with Demetrician hitting .348. Morgan Burke and Ellie White directed the offense, helping U-M hit .330 as a team with double-digit assists each. Maddi Cuchran anchored the defense with 12 digs, while Michigan's season-high 12 team blocks limited Notre Dame (3-5) to a .096 hitting percentage.
Michigan edged Notre Dame in a tight first set. Demetrician sparked the Wolverines early with a pair of kills, but the Irish rallied to take a 15-14 lead at the media timeout. The set stayed close, with the Irish taking a 22-21 lead, but Jacobs delivered back-to-back kills late, putting Michigan on the service line. Jenna Hanes added a kill to queue up set point, and Cymarah Gordon sealed it with the winner at 25-23.
The Wolverines controlled much of the second set behind Nyambio, who opened with a kill and later produced back-to-back blocks to build a 12-8 lead. A Demetrician back-row kill and a Jacobs strike stretched the advantage to 16-9. Notre Dame fought back to cut the deficit, but Michigan never trailed again. Nyambio closed the frame with another kill to clinch the 25-22 win.
Michigan raced out to a 7-1 lead in the third set, highlighted by kills from Jacobs and a pair of blocks from Hanes. A Demetrician ace pushed the margin to 13-8, and the Wolverines maintained control despite a late Notre Dame run. After the Irish cut the deficit to four, Michigan regrouped, and Demetrician capped her strong outing with the match-winning kill for a 25-21 victory and the 3-0 sweep.
The Wolverines begin conference play on Wednesday (Sept. 24), traveling to face No. 1 Nebraska at 6 p.m. CT at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The match will air live on Big Ten Network.
