ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team kicked off Big Ten Conference play with a decisive 5-0 win against in-state rival Michigan State on Friday night (Sept. 19) in front of 1,012 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. The Wolverines extended their win streak to five games; it was their third shutout over the stretch.
Four of Michigan's five goals came off its corner attack, and fifth-year senior Emmy Tran earned two of them for her first goals of the season. She inserted on both of her markers, tipping in freshman Maxine Rogge's shot from the top of the arc at the 20:13 mark before one-timing in a shot high in the waning seconds of the fourth at 59:57. The Wolverines strung together four passes on the latter, zigzagging the ball through the middle and culminating with Tran's chip shot from the left post. Junior Payton Maloney earned an assist on the final pass.
Tran became the 12th different Wolverine player to score this season, just two shy of their total from all of last season.
Junior Juliette Manzur tallied the first and game-winning goal at the 16:00 mark -- just a minute into the second quarter and four minutes before Tran's first goal -- with a one-timer of her own from in front of the MSU cage. Sophomore Eva Bernardy hammered a free hit from the right sideline; it ramped high off a Spartan stick and came down right to junior Esmée de Willigen on the MSU 25. De Willigen drove the circle and dished to Manzur, who swept it in for her fourth goal this season.
Michigan (5-1, 1-0 Big Ten) also tallied corner goals late in the third and early in the fourth. Rogge buried the direct shot from the top of the arc at 41:34 for her second marker of the season. Tran and graduate student Claire Taylor earned assists on the insert and stop, respectively.
Graduate student Abby Tamer took advantage of a big scrum in front of the MSU cage to knock one in at the 47:45 mark in the fourth -- her team-best fifth goal over the last five games. The Spartan goalkeeper stopped the initial shot and rebound attempts before MSU (3-3, 0-1 Big Ten) tried to clear, and the ball squeezed out left post, where Tamer lifted high cross-cage into the netting.
Michigan outshot the Spartans 23-8 and outcornered them 12-4. Junior/sophomore Hala Silverstein and graduate student Caylie McMahon combined for the shutout with two saves -- both by McMahon in the second half -- while MSU goalkeeper Lyra Gavino stopped eight of 13 U-M shots on goal.
Michigan will wrap up its weekend homestand against James Madison at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 21) at Ocker Field. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
