ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Despite posting significant advantages in both shots and penalty corners, the No. 8-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team saw its five-game winning streak halted in a 3-1 loss to James Madison on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 21) in front of 591 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field.
Michigan outshot the Dukes 29-10 and out-cornered them 15-3, including a 13-3 edge in shots and 7-2 in corners in the fourth quarter, but the Wolverines struggled to convert on several chances while James Madison capitalized on a few miscues.
Madelief Molier scored all three of JMU's goals on fast breaks into the circle, including a pair of odd-man rushes. The Dukes broke through first at the 21:05 mark midway through the second period when Molier split a pair of defenders to break free. Graduate student Claire Taylor got back to make a defensive save on the right post, but Molier collected her own rebound to score from the front of the cage.
James Madison extended its lead at 39:51 in the third, carrying the ball left to right into the circle and feeding a pass to Molier streaking in the opposite direction. She spun in front of the cage and deposited the ball into the right side.
Michigan appeared to answer late in the third when graduate student Abby Tamer chipped in a ball from the left side off a corner after a pair of passes and a scrum in front. The goal was initially awarded but later waved off for being too high.
The Wolverines finally broke through at 49:36 during their frenzied fourth quarter, as sophomore Eva Bernardy buried a direct corner sweep from the arc for her second goal of the season. Juniors Abby Burnett and Juliette Manzur earned assists on the stop and insert, respectively.
But the Dukes reestablished their two-goal advantage less than five minutes later, at 54:07, earning another breakaway after the last Michigan defender lost her footing. Molier carried the ball in on goal, pulled to her reverse stick, and finished.
Junior/sophomore Hala Silverstein and graduate student Caylie McMahon played a half apiece and recorded one save each, in addition to Taylor's defensive save. JMU goalkeeper Molly Schreiner posted 12 saves, including five in the fourth quarter.
Michigan (5-2) will return to the road for a pair of East Coast matchups next weekend, taking on Maryland at 5 p.m. Friday (Sept. 26) in College Park, Md., and Old Dominion at noon Sunday (Sept. 28) in Norfolk, Va.
