ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team used three goals in the opening half to vault to a 3-1 win over Creighton on Friday (Aug. 29) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Three players scored in the victory, while three others added an assist. Mitar Mitrovic got the Wolverines on the board with his first goal with the squad. Nolan Miller notched his first tally of the campaign for Michigan's second score, and Raymundo Mendez got his first goal of his tenure in Ann Arbor to make it three for the Maize and Blue.
Mitrovic assisted Miller's marker while Matthew Fisher and Shuma Sasaki contributed to Mendez's score.
Michigan held the shot advantage at 8-5, marking the third straight match the Wolverines have outshot an opponent.
Michigan (2-0-1) got the scoring started early as Sasaki drew his second penalty in as many games in just the fifth minute of action. Mitrovic stepped to the spot and scored the chance to give the Maize and Blue a 1-0 lead.
Mitrovic was on the assisting end of Michigan's second tally of the evening as he served a cross into the box that found the head of Miller, who punched it home to double U-M's advantage to 2-0 in the 23rd minute.
Creighton (0-2-1) drew a penalty of its own in the 26th minute, which it converted to draw closer, 2-1.
Mendez restored the multi-goal edge in the 33rd minute as Sasaki found him with a pass to the right side of the goal, and Mendez tucked the ball into the net for a 3-1 lead.
Both sides tightened defensively in the second 45 minutes. The two teams combined for four shots with none of those attempts finding the target. Although Creighton controlled possession in the late stages of the match, Michigan held firm and kept the Bluejays off the scoreboard in the second half to earn its second win of the season.
Next up, Michigan will close out the first homestand of the campaign by hosting Bowling Green at 2 p.m. on Monday (Sept. 1) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
