
Roode Nets Five Goals as Wolverines Run Past Cleveland State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 20-ranked University of Michigan men's lacrosse team ran past Cleveland State 19-5 on Tuesday evening (March 4) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
Sophomore Nick Roode led Michigan's offensive output with a career-best six points that included five goals and one assist. Senior Ryan Cohen added three points with two goals and one assist, and Aidan Mulholland scored a pair of goals. Bo Lockwood also had three points with one goal and two assists, and Jack Jenkins had two assists. On the faceoff dot, Jack Rideout won 14 for a career-high outing.
Michigan (4-2) scored three goals in 32 seconds in the third quarter and had two goals in less than a minute in both the second and fourth quarters to lock up the win.
Graduate student Pace Billings picked up eight ground balls and had two caused turnovers, while Mason Whitney had five ground balls and Kevin Kearns and Max Bonner each caused two turnovers. Freshman Joseph Budington earned his first career start in the cage and made four saves.
Cleveland State (2-4) scored two goals in the first seven minutes but it was all Wolverines to close out the quarter as Roode netted back-to-back goals and Mulholland notched the go-ahead goal with 1:30 left in the first quarter.
Roode added a pair of goals in the second quarter for his first career hat trick, while Cohen, Lockwood, CJ Reilly and Lukas Stanat scored one to give the Wolverines a 9-3 lead heading into the halftime break.
Michigan outshot Cleveland State 22-13 in the first half with Roode scoring four goals, Lockwood adding three points with a goal and two assists and Jenkins recording two assists.
The Wolverines closed out an eight-goal run in the third quarter, including three goals from Cohen, Jimmy Pisani and Rideout in 32 seconds to take a 15-4 lead into the final 15 minutes.
Josh Ford opened the fourth quarter with his first career goal, and U-M tacked on three goals, including a behind-the-back goal from Brandon Plemmons, to lock up the home win.
Michigan will head to Cambridge, Mass., for a matchup at Harvard on Saturday (March 8) at noon.
