EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Trailing 3-0 after three innings, the University of Michigan baseball team scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, piled on nine more in the fifth and held on to defeat Michigan State 11-7 on Wednesday (March 12) in a non-conference matchup at Jeff Ishbia Field at McLane Stadium.
The Wolverines (10-6) battled back in the fourth inning from a three-run hole after the Spartans scored three in the second inning on a two-run double followed by a single. Cole Caruso drew a one-out walk and two batters later, Colby Turner sent a 1-0 offering over the left field wall for a two-run home run and brought Michigan within a run, 3-2.
The fifth inning started innocently, with the first two batters walking and an RBI single from Mitch Voit tying the game at three. A Jeter Ybarra single and Cade Ladehoff fielder's choice were responsible for another pair of runs and a 5-3 U-M lead. Caruso singled and wound up at third base after an error by the right fielder to drive in another run. The Wolverines loaded the bases when the next three batters -- Matt Spear, Turner and AJ Rausch -- followed with a walk, and RBI single and a hit-by-pitch.
The next batter, Benny Casillas, walked to force home a run. Two batters later, Voit cleared the bases with a double to left field. When the inning ended, Michigan had sent 13 to the plate, scored nine runs on only five hits, and held an 11-3 advantage.
MSU (12-4) got four runs back in the bottom of the frame on one hit, two walks and two errors to cut the U-M lead to 11-7. Following the 54-minute fifth inning, the offenses for both teams cooled. The Wolverines and Spartans stranded four runners each over the final four innings without scoring a run.
Voit led the U-M hit parade, accounting for one-third of Michigan's 12 hits on the day going 4-for-5 with four RBI. Turner's fourth-inning blast was his first as a Wolverine. Grant Bradley earned his first Michigan start and earned a no-decision after allowing three runs and striking out three over three innings. Josh Kasner (2-0) picked up the win after 1.1 innings of relief, while Will Rogers and Max Debiec combined to pitch the final 4.2 innings, allowing no runs and five total baserunners and striking out four.
Michigan will return to action against USC in a three-game series at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium, beginning on Friday (March 14) at 4 p.m. The series opener will be streamed live on B1G+.
