
Michigan Defense Stifles Marquette in Season-Opening Victory

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 15 University of Michigan men's lacrosse team allowed the fewest goals in program history and rattled off 14 straight goals to earn a decisive 14-1 victory over Marquette in its 2025 season opener Saturday (Feb. 1) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
The Wolverines (1-0) played stifling defense, allowing just one goal in 60 minutes and going 48 minutes and 51 seconds without conceding after the Golden Eagles (0-1) scored their lone goal with 11:49 remaining in the first quarter. The defensive trio of Pace Billings, Kees van Wees and Mason Whitney caused four turnovers and picked up nine ground balls combined, while holding Marquette to 26 shots compared to Michigan's 49. Junior goalie Hunter Taylor made 10 saves in the victory.
Offensively, Michigan was led by Ryan Cohen and Jack Jenkins, who each recorded four points with two goals and two assists. Aidan Mulholland and Bo Lockwood added three points with two goals and one assist each. Graduate student Will Byrne notched his first two goals as a Wolverine, and Lukas Stanat scored in his debut donning Maize and Blue. In total, U-M's 14 goals came from seven different scorers. Jackie Weller dominated the faceoff, going 12-for-18 and picking up seven ground balls.
Marquette struck first, but the game quickly swung in favor of the Wolverines as they scored six straight, including two from Byrne and a goal and two assists from Cohen, taking a 6-1 lead into halftime.
Michigan outshot the Golden Eagles 26-16 in the first 30 minutes, while Taylor made seven saves.
The Wolverines continued their dominance in the second half, with Lockwood and Cohen each netting a goal in the third quarter to extend the lead to 8-1 entering the final period.
Michigan added six more goals in the fourth quarter, including two from Jenkins and one from Rowan Clay, sealing the season-opening win.
The Wolverines hit the road for a three-game stint, starting with North Carolina on Saturday (Feb. 8) at noon.
