COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 16-ranked and third seed University of Michigan men's soccer team used two goals and strong defense to defeat No. 23-ranked and No. 2-seeded Washington, 2-0, in a Big Ten Tournament semifinal match on Wednesday (Nov. 12) at Ludwig Field.
Mitar Mitrovic starred on offense for U-M with a goal and an assist. Nicholas Cassiday scored his second goal of the campaign to put Michigan up in the opening half. Matthew Fisher earned an assist on Cassiday's tally.
Michigan (12-2-4, 6-6-2 Big Ten) opened the scoring in the 23rd minute as Fisher and Mitrovic combined to find Cassiday on the right side of the penalty box, and the senior powered the ball past the diving Washington (10-6-2, 7-3-0 Big Ten) goalkeeper to put the Wolverines up, 1-0.
After showing resilience on the defensive end of the pitch, Michigan earned its 10th penalty kick of the year after Shuma Sasaki drew a foul inside the box. Mitrovic stepped up and converted the chance to put the Maize and Blue ahead, 2-0, in the 69th minute.
Behind several crucial saves by goalkeeper Isaiah Goldson, Michigan took control of the match and saw the game out to earn its ninth shutout of the year.
With the win, Michigan advances to the Big Ten Tournament final, and will face the winner of the match between No. 1-seeded Maryland and No. 4-seeded UCLA. The final will be held Sunday (Nov. 16) at 3 p.m. at Ludwig Field.
