ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team scored twice off its penalty corner in the second half, netting the equalizer with time expired in the third and the game-winner with just 2:07 remining in the fourth, to rally past No. 15 Rutgers, 2-1, on Sunday (Oct. 5) in front of 728 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field.
Graduate student Abby Tamer posted the deciding goal -- her third late game-winner this fall -- at the 57:53 mark after earning the corner on a successful video referral. Sophomore Eva Bernardy's sweep from the arc hit the Rutgers goalkeeper's pads and banged around in front before kicking loose in front of Tamer, who lifted high into the netting of the cage. It was her team-best sixth goal of the season.
Michigan had a goal waved off on review just six minutes earlier. Graduate student Claire Taylor put it in off another corner, but it was deemed to have deflected off Tamer's arm before entering the cage.
The Wolverines outshot Rutgers, 7-1, in the fourth quarter after tying the game with time expired in the third to steal -- then retain all the game's momentum. Michigan drew the corner with just :01 left in the frame after a ball deflected off a Rutgers defender toward its goalkeeper, who kicked away high for the foul. Junior/sophomore Kelsey Reviello drilled a hard shot from the arc, it rebounded off the goalkeeper's pads to the front of the cage, and junior Natalie Millman shoveled the ball to the left post, where junior inserter Juliette Manzur sent it high into the cage for her fifth goal this season.
Michigan scored all four of its weekend goals on its attack corner.
After a scoreless first half, Rutgers (7-5, 2-1 Big Ten) broke through midway, at 38:47, through the third quarter to take the first lead. A Scarlet Knight player sent an aerial toward the circle, and it deflected off a Michigan defender's stick to give Rutgers a 2-on-0 inside the circle. Graduate student goalkeeper Caylie McMahon came out to challenge, but Rutgers found the board on the left side.
In all, Michigan outshot the Scarlet Knights, 15-9, and outcornered them, 8-5, largely due to the lopsided fourth quarter. McMahon and junior/sophomore goalkeeper Hala Silverstein combined for seven saves -- with five from Silverstein for the second straight game -- while RU goalkeeper Emily Nicholls stopped two of four U-M shots on goal.
The Wolverines (8-3, 3-1 Big Ten) will travel to Columbus, Ohio, next Sunday (Oct. 12) to take on rival Ohio State at 1 p.m. at Buckeye Turf Field. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
