
Wolverines Fall at Minnesota in Big Ten Play

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team gave up a pair of goals in the early going of both halves and a late second-half goal in a 3-0 loss to Minnesota on Thursday evening (Sept. 19) at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
Michigan (1-7-1, 0-2-0 Big Ten) controlled possession in both halves, but Minnesota took advantage of its opportunities to get the win and remain unbeaten on the year. Michigan totaled 10 shots on the night, putting seven on goal in the contest. Goalkeeper Stephanie Sparkowski made four saves in goal, with Jenna Lang and Adi Walick each tallying two shots on the night.
Minnesota (8-0-1, 2-0-0 Big Ten) got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the third minute of the game with a goal off a cross to the right corner.
U-M had several chances in the first half but could not find the goal, heading to halftime facing a 1-0 deficit.
The Gophers stuck again in the early stages of the second half, blocking a clearing shot from Sparkowski in the 51st minute to find the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.
Michigan had a great chance with 17 minutes remaining, with Lang's shot going wide but resulting in a corner kick. U-M'S corner was served into the box, but the Gophers were able to clear to keep the Wolverines off the board.
Minnesota put the contest out of reach for Michigan with a goal in the 84th minute, giving the hosts a 3-0 lead.
Michigan kicks off a three-game homestand on Sunday (Sept. 22), hosting Nebraska at 1 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium.
