ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team will travel to Columbus, Ohio, to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes in the regular-season final for both teams on Saturday, April 20. The contest will be broadcast on Big Ten Network with a start time of 7 p.m., with Joe Beninati and Mark Dixon on the call.
Notes
• The Wolverines (6-6, 1-3 B1G) enter the week receiving votes in both the Inside Lacrosse Media and USILA Coaches Poll, and are No. 16 in the NCAA RPI.
• U-M is tied for fourth in the conference with Rutgers and Ohio State -- all have 1-3 Big Ten records. A Michigan win, coupled with a Penn State victory over Rutgers, would result in U-M hosting a Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinal matchup on Saturday (April 27).
• The Wolverines are led by their attack unit that features the trio of senior Michael Boehm (22g, 25a), junior Ryan Cohen (23g, 26a) and graduate student Justin Tiernan (43g, 3a) to combine to form one of the top attack trios in the NCAA with 142 points amongst the group. Tiernan ranks second in the country in goals per game (3.58/contest), while Cohen (4.08) and Boehm (3.92) rank third No. 3 and No. 4 in the Big Ten in points per contest. Cohen is also one goal away from becoming only the third 80-goal, 80-assist player in U-M history (Boehm, Josh Zawada).
• Tiernan's 43 goals are two away from Boehm's single-season record of 45 (2023). He has registered a hat trick in all but two contests as a Wolverine and has scored at least one goal in 24 straight contests -- the 11th-longest streak in the NCAA.
• With five points (2g, 3a.) against Johns Hopkins (March 30), Boehm broke the U-M career record for goals, assists and points. He now boasts 121 goals, 98 assists and 219 points in his storied Wolverine career. The assist mark is two short of becoming the first Wolverine in program history to reach 100 helpers in a career.
• Senior faceoff man Justin Wietfeldt ranks fifth nationally in faceoff win percentage (62.6 percent) and is third in the country in ground balls per game (9.17). With 110 ground balls on the season, he recently passed breaking former teammate Nick Rowlett's single-season record of 100 (2021, 2023) with ten pickups against Penn State (April 13).
• U-M is No. 17 in the country in scoring offense (12.83 goals/game), No. 8 in assists per game (8.17) and No. 12 in extra-man offense (45 percent) as well as No. 15 in points per game (21.00).
• Graduate close defender Cathal Roberts leads the Big Ten and No. 13 nationally in caused turnovers per contest with 1.83/game. As a team, U-M is No. 1 in the conference and No. 12 nationally in caused turnovers per contest with 9.42/game.
• U-M's ride has been exceptional this season, holding opponents to a clearing percentage of 81. Against Penn State, U-M forced eight failed clears keyed by caused turnovers from Boehm, Tiernan and sophomore Bo Lockwood (2).
• Last season, U-M sat at 1-2 in Big Ten Conference play and fell to 1-3 in league play with a 11-9 against the Nittany Lions at U-M Lacrosse Stadium (April 16, 2023). From there, U-M defeated Ohio State on April 21 to move to 2-3 in Big Ten play and go on a four-game winning streak before falling to No. 1 Duke in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.
• Michigan has won the last two contests in the series with OSU and three of the last five. U-M won back-to-back contests against the Buckeyes in Ann Arbor on April 21 (19-14) and April 29 in the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinal by a 14-10 count in a contest where Cohen reached 100 points in his career with four
