STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team fell by a 14-8 scoreline against No. 11 Penn State on Saturday (April 13) at PSU's Panzer Stadium.
Senior faceoff man Justin Wietfeldt collected 10 ground balls to up his season total to 110. His first, coming at 14:46 of the first quarter, set the U-M single-season record. The mark of 100 previously was held by Nick Rowlett in 2021 and 2023; Wietfeldt had 100 coming into today's contest.
Michigan (6-6, 1-3 Big Ten) trailed 3-2 after one quarter, with markers coming from junior Ryan Cohen (12:42) and senior Michael Boehm (:04). U-M also forced two failed clears in the quarter, implementing a 10-man ride in the early going.
Penn State (8-3, 2-2 Big Ten) stretched its lead to 4-2 before graduate Christian Ronda cut the deficit to 4-3 at the 9:05 mark of the second quarter. PSU rattled off three straight to run it to 7-3 before junior John Morgan put an end to the run with a tally at 4:12 of the stanza to bring the score to 7-4. PSU's TJ Malone notched his third score of the half with 1:54 to go in the quarter as U-M trailed 8-4 at the half after being outscored 5-2 in the second quarter.
Coming out of the half, PSU's Kyle Lehman notched his third of the day at 13:15 before U-M's Justin Tiernan (9:37) and senior defender Jack Whitney (7:03) cut it to 9-6. The Nittany Lions then closed the quarter on a 3-0 run and held a 12-6 lead with 15 minutes to play.
Both Cohen (5:41) and Tiernan (1:07) scored their second of the contest in the final quarter, but it wasn't enough as the Wolverines dropped the contest 14-8.
Tiernan's two goals give him 42 on the year and inches him closer to Boehm's single-season record of 45 set last season. Cohen led U-M on the day with four points (two goals, two assists).
Sophomore Mason Whitney earned his first start on close defense, while graduate student Ryan Schriber made his season debut.
U-M concludes the regular season next Saturday (April 20) at Ohio State. The contest is slated for a 7 p.m. faceoff and will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
